JSC “North West Telecom” have its fibre-optic network modernization finished

9th of December 2009 OJSC “North-West Telecom” had completed a stage of the long-term modernization project dedicated to upgrading of its transport network based upon dense wave division multiplexing technology (DWDM).

Sections of interregional transport DWDM network to bridge St Petersburg and Petrozavodsk, St Petersburg and Vologda, Vologda and Arkhangelsk, Vologda and Syktyvkar were put into operation in the course of implementation of the stage during 2008-2009. Data transmission rate up to 20Gb/s rate per one spectral channel was achieved in these sections.

The project is being implemented in order to meet world-wide trend of wave division multiplexing technology based networks development . Being compared to SDH technology based networks, WDM technology application results in tremendous increase of existing fibre-optic telecommunication channels capacity. Besides, it demonstrates excellent scalability and robustness. These features will allow for OJSC “North-West Telecom” to cope successfully with rapid traffic growth of the broad band access based services experiencing constant rise in volume last years.

Implementation of the project of the project was spirited with resolving of a challenging task of switching different network sections over to a new interregional network having been built upon “PUSK” equipment. The equipment was manufactured by Russian based company NTO IRE POLUS Ltd. Exploratory and conclusive project research, installation and commissioning works were conducted by the staff of Russian T8 LLC featuring high skills and wide expertise in developing DWDM transport solutions.

OJSC “North-West Telecom” Deputy general director /Technical Director Mr. Semanov says –

As soon as the demand of the subscribers in bandwidth constantly grows along with the type of transmitted information changes rapidly due to intensive introducing new services last years, realization of the project will provide for increase of efficiency in exploitation of our fibre-optic infrastructure and will facilitate further raising of the capacity of data transmission networks. Setting up and commissioning of complex DWDM networks built upon the equipment “PUSK” was held with high quality and in tight deadlines due to the cooperation with qualified staff of Russian company “T8″. Works were carried out without interrupting the transmission of the main traffic, which presents an opportunity of expanding DWDM networks built upon “PUSK” equipment.
