AN OPTICAL NETWORK FOR THE LARGEST AMMONIA PIPELINE IN THE WORLD HAS BEEN BUILT IN RUSSIA

T8 company has completed work on launching communication channels of the backbone technological network for Transammiak PJSC. The transition from copper infrastructure to optical network using wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) technology was one of the stages of a large-scale modernization of the world's longest ammonia pipeline.

Volga DWDM equipment was used for building a 40-channel network with a length of 1500 km and a bandwidth of 10 Gbit/s, operating over a pair of fibers. In total, 14 nodal points were combined, including pumping and other facilities from Togliatti to Rossosh in Voronezh region.

The optical network connects all systems of the main ammonia pipeline and provides data transmission:

- telemechanics and pipeline monitoring;
- operation of the system for alerting the population about emergency situations;
- communication between objects;
- remote video surveillance from intermediate stations and facilities.

An ammonia pipeline is a technological complex that requires stable and reliable operation of all components for many years. Therefore, when designing the network, engineers provided the possibility of expanding the channel capacity to 100 Gbit/s on the existing optical infrastructure. Another distinctive feature of the project is the geo-redundant control system, which ensures a high degree of reliability for the entire network.
